If your computer is functioning slower than normal or if you want to load images and videos to it quicker, try the following tips to speed it up, regardless of whether you have an old system or a new one.

1. Having a virus running in the background can really slow you down and sometimes, you may not even be aware that it is there so first thing you will need to do is download an anti virus program, and run a complete system scan with it. This will delete any viruses, spyware, and malware you may have.

2. Once you have deleted any viruses you may have had, we recommend you delete any spyware on your computer as well. In order to do this, download an anti spy ware program and run a full system scan with it.

3. You can remove any programs you don’t want from the list provided when you click on the start button, then control panel, and lastly, on add or remove programs.

4. Go into your task manager by Pressing CNTRL + ALT + DELETE. Once you are in there you will see several processes running. If you see anything on there that you are unsure of, perform a Google search of the process name to see if it is a known virus or a legit process.

5. Click on the Start button, then on Run, and then type msconfig. When you do this the System Configuration Utility window will open. Once it does, click on Startup tab and look for any software that you don’t need to auto start at startup. If you find any, simply uncheck the box and then click ok. After you click okay, be sure to reboot (restart) your computer.

6. Now that you’ve taken some steps to clean the software part of your computer, it’s time to focus on the hardware. To get a basic idea of what all is in your machine, click on the Start button, go to My Computer, and right click on it. After you do this, choose “properties” from the drop down menu and a screen showing the details about your hardware will open up.

7. As far as the speed of your computer goes, there are two major things to look at when it comes to hardware.

First, your processor (CPU for short). If your CPU is greater than 1.5 Ghz and your running any operating system made before Vista you should be fine. For Vista or above you may want a CPU that is 2.5 GHz, at least.

Replacing a CPU is not recommended for a beginner.

Second, your RAM. Check your RAM in the properties screen. If you have XP or older you should be fine with 256 mb RAM for regular computing or 512 mb for medium gaming but if you have Vista or higher and/or plan on heavy gaming, you will want at least 2GB of RAM.

RAM is not expensive and can be bought online, and can be easily installed.

Office equipment such as computers, copiers, printers, and fax machines are some of the main consumers of our electricity. In fact, 38% of the carbon dioxide emissions come from the electricity we use on these types of machines.

The following are steps you can take when choosing to go green with your electronics…

1. Ask for an Energy Star-certified computer or monitor, when shopping. By using Energy Star certified devices, you will save money on energy costs.

Saving energy helps reduce global warming and by using Energy-Star certified computers, monitors, and other devices you will be well on your way in your attempt to change to a greener way of living.

2. In order to reduce power requirements on your computer, after you set it up, close applications when they are not in use, set the brightness at the lowest comfortable level, and put your computer into sleep mode when you know you will be away for a few minutes.

By implementing the above mentioned steps you will be running your computer in the most energy efficient mode.

In order to ensure that the sleep functionality on your computer is set on a Windows machine, follow the steps below.

Under the Start Menu go to your Control Panel.

Under the Control Panel, click on Power Options.

Click on the Power Schemes tab to be able to set all of your power settings.

In this tab, you can set the amount of time your computer is inactive before it will go into standby ( or sleep ). Your monitor can, automatically, be turned off through this menu as well.

With the stress that comes with our busy lifestyles, there is little time to think of the complex details of security software.

Although an attack or infection can be potentially catastrophic, according to recent studies, many people avoid the notion that their digital assets may be vulnerable to attack.

Because of this I have added a list of helpful tips, to this post, which will help secure your computer from viruses, hackers, and worms.

Regularly Update Your Software:It is critically important that your software is updated on a regular basis. Most operating systems, firewalls, and antivirus’ can and should be configured to receive regular updates.

Install Firewalls:Firewalls not only unmask the identity of the individual computers behind them, they also examine and filter potentially damaging data entering or leaving the network.

Install Anti-Virus Protection:Symptoms of infection range from the annoying to catastrophic and include viruses, worms, Trojan horses, and a host of other programs.

Protect the content of your sensitive files and email:Email and files containing sensitive business information such as strategic plans, contracts, financial information, designs and more, often spread beyond the individuals they were intended for.

Use strong passwords:Unless otherwise protected, once a password is broken your sensitive data is exposed. With free software that is readily available on the web, most passwords can be broken in a number of minutes.

Hire a security consultant:Consider hiring an independent security consultant to examine your individual security situation. They will be able to help you create a comprehensive security policy that will meet your business needs.

In order to protect your computer from viruses, spyware, and from the spreading of viruses on the internet, we have added a list of tips, to this post, which will help you remove those viruses or spyware from your computer.

1. Do not open any files attached to an email from an unknown, suspicious or untrustworthy source.

2. Do not open any files attached to an email unless you have an anti-virus program that checks it first, even if it appears to come from someone you know. Some viruses can spread through email.

3. Do not open any files attached to an email if the subject line is questionable or unexpected.

4.Delete chain emails and junk email. Do not forward or reply to any to them. These types of emails are considered spam and can contain Trojans and other intrusive malware.

5. Do not download or copy any files from another computer or external drive or flash usb drive without checking it first with anti-virus software, as it can contain viruses.

6. Exercise caution when downloading files from the Internet especially if it is from an unknown or un-trusted website. Ensure that the website is a legitimate and reputable one. Make sure you use an anti-virus program to check any downloaded files before opening.

7. Update your anti-virus software regularly. Hundreds of new virus threats are discovered each month, so stay protected by keeping your anti-virus program and definitions up-to-date.

8. Back up your files on a regular basis. If a virus damages your files, at least you can recover them with your backup copy. You should keep your backups separate from your computer, such as on CDs.

9. When not sure about something, take caution and do not open, download, or execute any file or email attachment.

10. Keep your computer operating system and programs up-to-date and free of vulnerabilities that can be exploited. Microsoft Windows has an automatic update feature that can keep your PC updated with all the current patches and fixes. (Internet is required).
